Loomis, California

Farm Size: 10 acres

What They Grow: Mandarins, Oranges, Grapefruit

Established in 1905 by J.H. Nixon and his family, The Flower Farm has been part of the agricultural landscape for more than a century. In 2004, John and Annie Bowler purchased the property with their children and began transforming the historic farm into the vibrant destination it is today.

The Flower Farm is home to six acres of citrus orchards, a half-acre of Malbec grapes, a diverse collection of fruit trees, expansive vegetable gardens, and a cutting flower garden. The farm’s citrus orchards were planted in 2007 and include approximately 40% mandarins, 30% navel oranges, 20% Valencia oranges, and 10% blood oranges. These fruits are harvested seasonally and featured at the farm’s on-site Café and Gift Shop.

Today, the property brings together agriculture, hospitality, and education through its Inn and Event Center, Café, Gift Shop, nursery, and wine tasting with Casque Wines. Guests are encouraged to explore the orchards and gardens, learn about the plants grown on the property, enjoy the abundant wildlife, and experience the beauty of farm life firsthand.

Environmental stewardship is central to The Flower Farm’s approach. Much of the property’s electricity is generated through solar power, while environmentally friendly farming practices, composting, and recycling help reduce its environmental footprint. The farm’s kitchens incorporate fruits, vegetables, and eggs grown on-site or sourced from nearby farms, further strengthening its connection to the local food system.

Education and community are also an important part of the farm. The nursery was selected as a retailer for the UC Davis Arboretum All-Stars, a collection of beautiful, resilient, and drought-tolerant plants well suited to California landscapes. The Flower Farm also hosts gardening and water-wise landscaping classes, yoga, art classes, and educational farm and nursery tours for small groups.

Through farming, hospitality, education, and environmental stewardship, The Flower Farm continues its long agricultural legacy while inviting visitors to slow down, explore, and celebrate the beauty and abundance of life on the farm.
