For the Duivenvoorden family, their cows are much more than livestock. From Sugar and Lily to Clover, Rocket, and Sweetie, every member of the herd is treated with care and respect.
Unlike conventional dairies, Duivenvoorden Farms follows a unique approach to raising and milking their cows. Their herd is pasture-raised year-round and fed a 100% grass-based, grain-free diet, with locally grown, non-GMO hay and farm-grown barley fodder provided during the winter months. This approach allows the cows to graze naturally while receiving the nutrition they need throughout the changing seasons.
Animal welfare is central to the farm's practices. Newborn calves remain with their mothers for at least two weeks before joining the milking herd together. Even then, calves continue nursing throughout the day until they are ready to transition to a pasture-based diet. The farm also milks its cows just once daily, rather than the conventional two or three times, allowing them to spend more time grazing and reducing the demands of milk production.
Duivenvoorden Farms is especially known for its rich, cream-top raw whole milk. Unlike most commercially produced whole milk, which is standardized to approximately 3.5% butterfat, their milk is never skimmed or separated. Each bottle contains the full amount of natural cream produced by the cows, creating a distinctive cream line and a naturally rich, full-bodied flavor. Customers can enjoy the cream for homemade butter, ice cream, or coffee creamer, or simply shake the bottle to blend it back into the milk.
