Our FEED YOUR NEIGHBOR program ensures equal access to the good food that the Tahoe Food Hub sources from local farms. We do this by engaging our farmers, local businesses and our community to get local food into the hands of members in our community facing hunger. We do this in partnership with Project MANA, North Lake Tahoe’s hunger relief agency.
Many hunger relief agencies struggle to provide high-quality fresh produce, Feed Your Neighbor allows us to do to just that. Our farms work hard to grow crops that are nutrient dense and harvested in line with sustainable growing practices. Tahoe Food Hub has been able to provide over 15,000 pounds of produce and fruits through our farmers and with Feed Your Neighbor we hope to grow this number exponentially! Feed Your Neighbor works toward Tahoe Food Hub’s greater mission of expanding access to local food to all corners of our community.
Feed Your Neighbor engages local businesses with an easy way to support local farms and those in need. Businesses select the dollar amount and the frequency at which they would like to donate. Donate $100 of local food every week or $200 every two weeks, or choose a different amount that works best for your business. With each donation Tahoe Food Hub will purchase food from local farms on behalf of a local business and get it delivered to Project MANA for distribution. Tahoe Food Hub will recognize participating businesses on the Feed Your Neighbor web page and you will receive a charitable tax receipt letter upon your first donation. Are you a local business and want to get involved? Contact us here!
For Farmers and the Community:
Each week, farmers can drop-off extras and seconds from their harvest and Tahoe Food Hub will get it delivered to Project MANA for their food distribution. Tahoe Food Hub coordinates volunteer, gleaning teams when local farms contact us with surplus crops. Our gleaning teams caravan down and harvest produce that may otherwise go to waste in the field and instead it gets to those in need. If you are interested in hearing about gleaning opportunities and volunteering, contact us here!
Triple Bottom Line:
Proceeds of Feed Your Neighbor benefit the community it three ways, not only feeds those in need and supports local farms but will also benefit the Tahoe Food Hub’s Farm to School Program. Coming in September 2020, our new Sierra Growing Classroom, an educational farm centrally located behind Plumas Bank in Truckee.
